The vineyards are in Requena in the village of Camporrobles close to Utiel, a high, rugged plateau, nearly 1,000 metres above sea level just inland from Valencia. The combination of hot, dry summers, cold nights and poor, limestone soil make the area relatively free of vine diseases and so ideal for organic farming.

In the past the region was better known for the production of bulk wine, but recently local growers have focused more on quality and bottling. Among these is Sierra Norte who are leading the drive for better wines using local varieties such as Bobal.

In the glass its almost purple in colour, with open, warm and spicy aromas of blackberry, raspberry and plum. The taste is big and bold with loads of ripe, chocolate driven dark fruits, sour cherry and violet floral notes. Real depth with supple tannins for structure.

Food match: Meat charcuterie from West Cork Olives or The Pigs Back, full-flavoured meat dishes (vension/boar) from Ballinwillin House or pork dishes from Caherbeg Free Range Pork, or with hard cheeses . Also try with dark chocolate from David Chocolatier of Three Spoons.
